Centennial Celebration
What a memorable and remarkable year 2017 was as we celebrated 100 Years of Community Inspired Service. We kicked off our Centennial Celebration on January 3, 2017, with approximately 1000 employees. Our employees are the foundation of the college so it was fitting to begin the celebration with them. During the Centennial Celebration, we hosted over 100 events. Many alumni returned to campus. For some, it was their first time back since graduation. Listening to our alumni say, “My time at Hinds was the best two years of my life. I wish it had been a 4-year college. It changed my life forever,” made the hard work very worthwhile.
One of the most meaningful activities was selecting and honoring 100 People Passionate about Hinds. View a short bio on each of the 100 people.
In 2017, our students performed more than 100 acts of community service in honor of our Centennial. We retrieved a time capsule buried at our 75th anniversary and buried a Centennial Time Capsule.
We were honored with proclamations and resolutions by the five counties we serve, a number of cities in our district, and the Mississippi Senate and House of Representatives.
The Centennial Celebration ended on November 4, 2017, at a Gala with more than 400 guests, an outstanding auction, great entertainment by Hinds’ student groups, a message from Gov. Phil Bryant (a Hinds alum), and a delicious meal donated by Valley Services, Inc.
Throughout the Centennial Celebration, over $1 million was raised, which was used primarily to establish a Centennial Endowment. The Foundation Board of Directors will be able to use the return from the endowment to provide scholarships for students, to support faculty and staff development, or to meet other challenges that may arise. Many college employees, alumni, and friends worked to make our Centennial year something special.

As we begin a new century, we know Hinds has a bright future as it continues to serve our communities and to make a difference in the lives of our students, employees and communities.
It was the highlight of our careers to be a part of this momentous occasion. With grateful hearts, we sincerely thank each person who joined us to celebrate 100 years of Hinds Community College.
Warm Regards,
Jackie and Colleen
