Frequently Asked Questions
After I have prepaid for my specialty plate, and I trade vehicles, can I put that plate on my new vehicle?
Yes. The county will allow you to transfer a specialty plate to another vehicle.
How soon after the specialty plates are available must I go to the county office and pick mine up?
The vehicle owner has up to 60 days to pick up the plate after the Department of Revenue (DOR) has informed the College that the license plates are available in the county office. After 60 days, vehicle owners will be required to pay the special fees again.
How much money does Hinds Community College receive from the sale of the plates?
The amount the College receives is established by authorizing legislation. It is estimated that the College will receive $32.50 for each specialty plate sold.
Can I keep the Hinds CC specialty plate if I decide I would like to have a different specialty plate registered to my vehicle?
State law requires that the vehicle owner who no longer desires to have the specialty plate registered to a vehicle surrender the plate at the county tax collector’s office.
Can an individual have more than one Hinds CC specialty license plate?
Yes, unless there is a stipulation in the statute on the number of plates to be issued per person.
Will the vehicle owner be required to turn in the license plate that is currently on their vehicle in order to pick up the new specialty plate?
Yes, the vehicle owner is required to bring in the old license plate to be able to receive the new specialty plate.
What if a vehicle owner purchased one of the specialty plates while living in one county but has since moved to another county? How will they be able to register their specialty plate in their new county?
To forward the specialty plate registration from the old county office to the new county office, the vehicle owner may either 1) go into the new county office and have the clerk call the old county office, or 2) contact the DOR to have the registration forwarded.
What happens if a vehicle owner changes their mind and is no longer interested in having the specialty plate?
The vehicle owner should contact the Hinds Community College Foundation office at 601-857-3350. The College is required to presell 300 license plates to remain compliant with the law, and a vehicle owner changing their mind could cause the organization to drop below the required threshold.
